Giant

You may not know this about me, but one of my all-time favorite movies is "Giant." Often times when I mention this to people, they have no idea what movie I'm talking about. For some reason, it's not carried the same kind of timelessness that "Gone With the Wind" or other epic movies of the same era have carried.

When I was a kid, my grandmother had the movie on VHS that she had recorded from TV at some point. It was split into two VHS tapes (that should take you guys back to a special place in your heart)- but I would watch it multiple times every time I went to Mississippi to visit my grandparents. It made me fall in love with the idea of creating a life with someone- even if that someone is nothing like you. Elizabeth Taylor plays Leslie Benedict who is a wealthy socialite from Virginia. Rock Hudson (who I am slightly in love with) plays Bick Benedict who meets Leslie while purchasing a horse from her father. They immediately fall in love, and they move to Bick's ranch in Texas. It's the story of their life. For better or worse. Mistakes and all. Love, loss, children, friends, fights. It's all there.

It's also a famous movie because it would be James Dean's last. He was killed in a car accident during the last days of filming. I love his character's story, too.Jett Rink came from nothing. Got lucky in oil and made it huge. But. He had nothing to show for his life by the end. A tragic story, but an epic one told my James Dean that makes me cry every time.
It's a special movie to me. I think because it always makes me think of those summers in Quitman. The other day my family was talking around the dinner table, and I said some movie was one of my favorites. My grammy spoke up in her barely audible, whisper of a voice and said, "I'm pretty sure your favorite movie is Giant." And, of course, she's right. It is.

The Outsiders

As I mentioned before, The Outsiders is one of my favorite books of all time. I read it with my students every year- and they always love it. Mainly because it's amazing. And party bc I'm an awesome teacher. :)

After we read the book, I always show them the movie.

And the kids always get a kick out of the fact that it includes Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, and Ralph Machio-the-guy-from-Karate-Kid. The guy that played the main character Ponyboy, C. Thomas Howell, has gone on to do other things, but he is-by far- the least famous of the cast.

But, my favorite thing is that all of my girls fall in love with Rob Lowe. He plays the roll of Soda Pop Curtis, and he is precious. Since Rob Lowe is older than my students, most of them have never seen him in movies and stuff.
But, after watching this movie- especially the scene where he's looking for his clothes- my girls all love him.

They're welcome.

Grease 2

I'm not embarrassed to say I've had this song in my head ALL day. It makes me laugh out loud.

One of my 7th graders told me she "got" this song- and I had to look her straight in the face and promise her that she didn't. But she would one day. And we would laugh.

Enjoy. Sing along!

Dear Universe

If at all possible, I would like to trade lives with Stephanie Zinone. You know, from Grease 2?
Thank you,
Cami Smith

I want a whole lot more than the boy next door...
I want hell on wheels.

dog movies

Last night my friend Jesse made me watch Eight Below.
He told me I would love it.
I doubted him.
This was foolish.
For multiple reasons.

Number one.
Paul Walker. Do I need to elaborate?
I didn't think so.

Number two.
I learned that the scariest animal I've ever seen does actually exist. Excuse me, but do you know about leopard seals? Hands down the scariest thing I've ever seen. Outside of a dinosaur. In Jurassic Park. (Felt the need to clarify since the dinosaurs in Land Before Time are precious and make me want a pet dinosaur.)
Number three.
It's a dog movie.
And dog movies, by definition, are great.
And sad.
I'm not going to lie when I tell you that I cried in this movie. Not a lot. But enough. I am a movie cry-er anyway, but dog movies? Please. Game over. I honestly do NOT understand people who don't cry in dog movies. Because even the ones that are good, are sad. Seriously. I cry in all dog movies.

Example 1. Homeward Bound. They get home in the end. I know. But when Shadow comes over the hill at the end? Game over. BAWLING. hot mess. Cannot even contain it.

Example two. My Dog Skip. I took my little sister, her bff Anna, and Anna's brother Will to see this movie in the theaters when it came out. We were all crying our eyes out by the time it was over. Seriously. If you've never seen this movie, I highly suggest you stop reading blogs and locate it and watch it now. No seriously, right now. Go. Heart wrenching. (And- bonus- Luke Wilson is in this. And I love him.)
Example three. Marley & Me. My god-brother Bo pointed out that this "family movie" came out on Christmas day. And (spoiler alert) the dog dies. I'm sorry? Family? Christmas? It's almost as bad as The Family Stone (which I love, but is SO sad). I dare you to watch this without crying. If you win, you have no soul. I'm just sayin.

Gidget

I love this movie.
I have the tape. Like VHS. Yes. It's true.
I have loved this movie since I was a kid- my mom loved it and made us watch it. So, I've grown up watching it. And I still have about 10 VHS tapes in my life- mainly because I haven't been able to replace them on DVD. Either I haven't found them, or I haven't looked. People in my life make fun of me for watching this movie. And then double the fun making when they find out that I have the tape. But I don't care. I love it.

I want to BE Gidget. In the scene above specifically- when Moondoggie is singing to her. Cannot take it. Love it. Love the boys. Love Kahuna. Love Moondoggie. Loves James Darren times a million. AND to top it all off, it makes me want to surf! Now, I've grown up going to the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico- not really known for their killer waves. So, I do not surf. But this movie makes me want to surf. But a sad thing happened on Saturday.
I was watching my moive in my room.
And then I had to leave.
And while I was gone, a TRAGEDY OCCURED.
SOMEONE ACCIDENTLY TAPED OVER GIDGET.
Like with the news.
I don't know how.
I don't know why.
But it happened.
And I am BEYOND sad.
So, now I need a DVD.
If you would like to support my happiness, you can follow the link (click the pic) to buy me a copy of this movie. Seriously. I may die without it. I'm just saying.
It has all 3 movies on this DVD. Which I mean, whatever. I really just NEED the first one. But I can't find it alone on DVD. And I like the other ones ok.

Am dying without my movie.

He's Just Not That Into You

Maybe you didn't read this book when it first came out a few years ago, but I did.
And I was a band wagon jumper.
I loved it and wanted every woman I knew to read it. As a Christian, there had to be a few adjustments made (the sex part mainly), but on the whole, the principles are so true.
Attention Boys- Yes, we really are this dumb. And REALLY do make these kinds of justifications for your actions. I know, I know. Studpid. I got it. But it doesn't change the fact that it's true.
What's great about this book is that ever girl in the world gets it. We don't know why we continue to do the things we do and think the things we think. But we do. We get it. We've all felt all of these emotions.
And the girls who say they haven't are lying.
or just huge whores. :)
but I digress.
If you've never read this book, I strongly recommend that you do. It'll be nothing but good for you.
On a much more recent update, I saw the move last night.
Phenom.
My friend Walker took me on a hot date to Mexican and the movies. It was incredible.
The hot date and the movie.
It'll make you laugh out loud.
You may tear up.
You'll see your friends in it.
You'll see your boyfriends in it.
You'll see your unrequited love in it.
And sadly, you'll see yourself in it.
It's so good.
Walker didn't love it more than life, but he laughed a few times and liked some of the storylines. Some of it made him want to gag, but it is a chick flick, so I wouldn't expect anything else.
You should def go see it. Go on a date, go with your girl friends, make your guy friend take you-- whatever. It's great. You'll love it!

a busy girl

I have been SUPER busy the last week- finished school last Friday- had two days of post planning this week- and in the mean time managed to see 4 movies and 2 concerts. Jealous? I know. I would be jealous of me, too.

I saw Steve Miller Band and Joe Cocker at the new Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta-- it's really nice- it's very comparable to Lakewood/HiFiBuys in size but just a newer, slightly classier version. But it was a GREAT show-- Joe Cocker impressed me- Steve Miller Band was as awesome as I could have ever imagined.

And I saw it with some amazing girls!I also saw Natasha Bedingfield, Kate Voegle and The Veronicas at Variety Playhouse this week- SO SO SO SO great-- I love Kate Voegle-- she was uh-MAZ-ing. Can't handle how great she is!
But the whole show was super!!

And I've seen Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (amazing), Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford is still hot as ever), What Happens and Vegas (Kutcher and Cameron at their bests), Forgetting Sarah Marshall (HILARIOUS), and Sex and the City (still love Big- he's my #1). Check them out!!

Big is ALWAYS better

So, I LOVE Chris Noth-- the love for him started when he was on Law&Order- as Detective Mike Logan-- I loved how crass and cynical he was. (And he was with Jerry Orbach and Jesse Martin which I did NOT hate either...)

And then he went away. AND THEN HE CAME BACK- even better as Mr. Big on Sex & The City-- life changing. I always liked him most- even over the sweet guys in Carrie's life- I ALWAYS wanted her to choose Big. So when she picked him- my life was complete.

And now he's back.
And the world is good again.
Love Chris!

March Movie Madness

Thanks Ellebee for the fun!

1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDB and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Label quote with blogger's name with correct guess.
5. GUESSERS: NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search functions. I mean, you can cheat if you want, but is it really that important?
6. One movie guess per blogger. Give people a chance to guess before you steal all of the awesome!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Well, don't play hard to get or you might miss somthing.
2. I don't want to see your smilin' and shuff in' and hear all your minstrel show singing on this bus.
3. Whenever I'm in a room with a guy, no matter who it is - a date my dentist, anybody - I think, If we were the last two people on Earth, would I puke if he kissed me?
4. If you'da been thinkin you wouldn't 'a thought that.
5. These things are so cool. They can shoot underwater, pour sand in them and they'll shoot. They shoot every time.
6. Money isn't everything, Jett. --- Not when you've got it.
7. Any guy can sweep any girl off her feet, he just needs the right broom.
8. Only grown-up men are scared of women.
9. I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this. --- I was thinking the same thing. That John Denver's full of shit, man.
10. Well, I'm not really ready for a relationship, Lois, but thank you for asking. Hey, maybe I'll give you a call sometime. Your number's still 911? All righty then.
13 Going on 30
Sorry for all the 30 talk lately--- but I watched "13 Going on 30" again today for the first time in a while.
What a GREAT movie!! I love it!
Love when the mom says that she wouldn't go back and change any of her mistakes because she wouldn't have learned how to make things right.
Love that.
And how true is it? When we truly learn from mistakes, then we learn how to make things right in the future. Only God can repair those broken bridges and hearts- and when we truly Him allow Him to have control over our mistakes, then we can let Him make it right.
I think it's time I let him.
I knew I'd love it....
Step Up 2 came out this weekend.
It is amazing.
In a highschool-awesome dancing-not great acting-totally predictable- sort of way.
I loved it.
And I'm not a little embarassed.
It's totally predictable-- and the dancing is AMAZING. There's a scene with Channing Tatum (reprising his role of Tyler Gage from the first movie) where they're dancing in the club-- and there are trampolines in the floor. And it is bad ass. So amazing.
And reminder. this boy is SO pretty. He was a douchey guy in "She's the Man"-- but he redeemed himself in this. Love him. and boy can straight DANCE.
